As Omi Kingdom marked the 5th anniversary of HRM Oba Olorunsola Akinyelure’s coronation, the event took on an even greater significance with the conferment of the prestigious chieftaincy title of Basorun on Barrister Dele Akinyelure. The celebration, held on 10th August 2024, was a momentous occasion, drawing a diverse gathering of Omi Kingdom’s illustrious sons and daughters, along with prominent monarchs and political figures from across Ondo State.
An Illustrious Journey: The Life and Achievements of Barr. Dele Akinyelure
Born on 31st December 1976, Barrister Dele Akinyelure hails from a distinguished royal lineage in Ode-Omi, Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State. His father, Pa Allen Olatuja Akinyelure, and his mother, Mrs. Areth Akinyelure (née Lebi), ensured he received a solid educational foundation. His early education took place at Salvation Army Primary School in Ode-Omi, followed by secondary education at Arerin Grammar School, Ode-Irele, and United High School in Ikorodu, Lagos State. His academic diligence saw him complete his secondary education in 1994, with further studies at Premier College, Ode-Irele, where he excelled in his examinations in 2001.
Barr. Dele’s passion for law led him to Ekiti State University, where he earned both a Diploma in Law (DIL) and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB Hons). His legal journey progressed through the Nigerian Law School, Kano Campus, where he was called to the bar in 2014, marking the beginning of a promising legal career. Not one to rest on his laurels, Dele furthered his education in Peace and Conflict Resolution at the National Open University of Nigeria, Akure Campus, where he achieved both a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) and a Master of Science (M.Sc.). His quest for knowledge continues, as he recently applied for a Ph.D. in Peace and Conflict Resolution at the Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE).
In 2011, Barr. Dele’s dedication to public service was recognised by Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who appointed him as a caretaker committee member for Irele Local Government. He served as Supervisor for General Duties, Protocol, and Strategy, showcasing his leadership and organisational skills. His contributions did not go unnoticed, and in 2018, Governor Odunayo Oluwarotimi Akeredolu appointed him as a commissioner on the board of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission. After serving an initial five-year term with distinction, he was reappointed to the same position in 2023, a testament to his unwavering commitment to public service.
Barr. Dele’s life is a blend of professional excellence and personal fulfilment. He is married to Princess (Mrs.) Kikelomo Akinyelure (née Abiodun), a princess from Gboroye Quarters, Ode-Irele, and together they are blessed with wonderful children. His experiences, both in Ondo State and beyond, have shaped him into a respected figure in the community.
The title of Basorun is more than just a ceremonial honour; it is a recognition of Barr. Dele Akinyelure’s contributions to the Omi Kingdom and his dedication to the well-being of his people. As Basorun of Omi Kingdom, he is expected to play a crucial role in the continued development and prosperity of the kingdom, serving as a bridge between tradition and progress.
