– STORY BY IBIKUNLE IKUYINMINU (AKURE)
Are Medical Doctors born or made? This poser has over time generated heated debates at several fora. But for Adebayo Akinmo, Chief Medical Director of Lifecare Hospital, Okitipupa, it is a case of a man born with an inmate tendency for taking risks, identifying and acting on promising business opportunities. Fortunately, these attributes have brought phenomenal growth and expansion to the health facility, situated in Ode-Aiyeka, OKitipupa Local Government. Also, the success of this young man has earned him accolades as one of the most successful medical practitioners not only in Ondo State, but indeed in the entire South-West. His tray into the Medical profession started long ago when he was at the Primary School. He, together with a friend and classmate wanted to pursue either medicine and surgery or Engineering, and their class teacher as at then noticed this in them, and he encouraged them the more. Although he wanted to study at the University of Ilorin, he ended up graduating at the Obafemi Awolowo University, which is in any way more rated than the University of Ilorin in terms of the quality of education and infrastructures. And when asked the rationale behind his initial preference for Ilorin over Ife, the young man remarked that one man’s meat is another man’s poison, although he would agree with anyone that OAU remains the Oba awon University” (King of Universities) in Nigeria. And it is true; the university has weathered the storm to be so recognized the best in the Nigeria Federation. Upon graduation, Dr. Adesayo Akinmo went for a year of intership at the Obefemi University Teaching Hospital, having performed excellently in the interview conducted for those who were to undergo the programme; and upon the completion of same, he went for his mandatory one year of service to the nation. Otherwise referred to as National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) which he did at Orhiomwon Local Government Area of Edo State. An outstanding young man, he emerged the best corps member in the 2012/2013 service year among the Batch C set of corps members in the year. He was also the best Corps Member in the Community Development Services/Press Club in the year.
Upon the completion of this scheme, Akinmo now fully equipped as a Medical Doctor, proceeded to work in some private hospitals in Lagos and Port Harcourt where perhaps he garnered enough experience to come up with his own medical establishment, Lifecare Hospital, situated at 67 Stadium Road, Ode-Aiyeka, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Reputed for its intensive health care services, the hospital comfortably boast of all the departments expected to be found I n a standard hospital, including the Out-Patient Department (OPD), General Ward Department Labour Room and Emergency Department. Other Departments within the Hospital premises include VIP Department, Theatre, and what have you. Recently, the hospital decided to gain some new grounds with the acquisition of a brand new (State of the art) ambulance to take care of the medical emergencies of the people of Okitipupa and its environs.
According to this Ikale-born medical expert, the decision to come back home to set up a hospital was not an easy one, and that in the spirit of contributing one’s quota to the development of one’s environment, one has got to do this. Akinmo who has got some challenges to contend with consequent upon his decision to come back home to set up his hospital. According to him, “you are often underpriced because you are known to them”. He is however grateful to God that is own “prophet” is highly respected in his area as against the age-long eschatological saying that prophets do not have honour at home.
Meanwhile, in her effort to bring to the focus of the world, the mess in private hospitals in the South-West geo-political zone in the country, the magazine’s Editorial Board rated Lifecare Hospital as one of the leading hospitals, not only in Ondo State, but indeed in the entire South West. Asked what was the magic ward, the Chief Medical Director attributed this to God to whom he returned all the glory, and to the wonderful people in his team. He remarked that the hospital management will continue to give her best in uplifting the health standard of the people “in spite of the very many challenges associated with establishing one’s business in one’s town”. When you know your work, you stand tall among your equals. So we bless God for the background’ remarked the Harvard certificated Doctor.

Meanwhile, an American-based Medical Doctor and Proud son of Ode-Aye, in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State has commenced the courage and foresight of Dr. Akinmo for setting up not just a hospital in the environment, but indeed a life-saving one for that matter. Olumuyiwa Daramola, a Clinical research patient diversity advocate and prominent member of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has lamented the death of medical facilities in most parts of the local government. He appreciated Governor Rotimi Akeredolu for his positive efforts in this direction and the few functional private hospitals available to complement the efforts of the government health institutions.
In an interview, an elated young man has similarly passed a vote of confidence on the operations of the hospital, himself having benefitted from the sound professionalism of the Chief Director Ilesanmi Ajewola whose wife was to be delivered of a set of twins, and who had been referred from one or two other hospital to Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital for what he described as special surgery heard about the medical exploits of Lifecare Hospital and gave it a try. At the hospital, the wife was delivered of the babies, not even with surgery.
On the relationship between the hospital’s management, the staffers and the apprentices, Ebimomi Ayomikun Josephine, an administrative assistant is of the view that this has been superb. She also disclosed to our correspondents that one of the factors that keep the hospital moving is the extremely low mortality rate compared with other hospitals around.
Indeed, for Dr. Adebayo Akinmo, holder of a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) obtained from the University of Southwales, United Kingdom, the best is certainly yet to come!.
